Gordon Odundo the CEO of Nairobi Hospital has had his suspension extended as the fight for control of the medical institution hits its third month. This information was put down in a letter that was addressed to the embattled chief executive that was done on Friday 8th February. The chairman of the hospital Board Mr John Simba, said that the management had made a decision to extend the suspension until 13th April.

Mr Odundo’s suspension opened a new phrase to the crisis that is posing a threat to rip one of East Africa’s most advanced health care facilities. The hospital has been in conflict with itself since November and the issue at stake is the control of the billions that are in form of tenders for projects and the unstable revenue generated by the hospital annually.

A couple of years back, the hospital is said to have been generous with its giving towards one Anderson Centre which is a 12-storey building with a capacity of  400-seat auditorium and a massive kitchen block. Also last month some senior doctors and members of the Kenya Hospital Association which has about 1800 members owning the hospital are said to have kicked out some board members from an ongoing meeting.

The latest example is now Odundo who opposed the awarding of a tender for the supply of insurance services to a company owned by one of the board members. The board member is reported to have been furious after losing the tender that was awarded in November last year and that was when Odundo found himself put to bench.

The hospital board however watered down the claims that the hospital is facing in-house problems by saying that Odundo’s suspension was procedural and warranted. This was said during a paid advertisement that took place on Sunday 9th. In the advertisement, the board claimed the CEO was suspended after a forensic audit carried out by EY revealed some gaps that required an extension of the audit.
